the Nature of Sand

I’ve decided to go ahead and upload the first six chapters of the book I’m working on, the Nature of Sand.  I’ve spent a couple of years now on this story, and I’m hoping to finish it soon.  It has gone through a lot of revision as I’ve continued to evolve as a writer, and I’m anxious to hear what people think.  Thanks to Jason Kimerling, a graphic artist friend of mine, for designing the cover art.  Please feel free to click the link below, give it a read, and let me know what you think!

  1. James,

Very engaging story with great character development! The story moved along at a good pace and I was left wanting to read more and find out about the past 12 years of Max’s life. The only part I wondered about was when Max and Jake were eating at Billy Burger,Jake’s conversation seemed a little incongruent or formal. Maybe you were trying to highlight his intellect? In that section only I think he would seem more real to me as a reader with more “everyday language” ..actually I think it was one word”normality” that threw me..but that is minor..Overall Awesome Job..wish you the best and look forward to reading the entire book!

  2. Thank you for the comments, Kathleen. The scene at the restaurant is one that I’m still working on, and your input is helpful. Take care!

  3. I guess we are all a “work in progress” and this is darn hard work!! Best wishes as you move along and I will look forward to hearing about your progress..am working up “the nerve ” to start my our blog! By the way, Stephen King’s book On Writing is a classic. Thanks for the lead Have a good day!

  4. James, wow! I loved this story. Once I started reading, I couldn’t stop! And imagine my delight when you said that Max lived in a small town in New Mexico about 200 miles south of Albuquerque…I grew up in a small town in New Mexico that is 180 miles south of Albuquerque, called Fort Sumner! WOW! Your book needs to be published. Are you sending out queries? It rocks, it sings, it wows! I am so very impressed with your character development and your ability to build a story at the right pace. Excellent work, Watson!

    • Thanks so much for the kind words, Libbye! I too grew up in small New Mexico towns, and so my fictional town is loosely based on Carrizozo, where I went to high school. In fact, I think we played you guys! Small world…

  5. James,

I read it all again and love the suspense that is building about Max and what it really going on with him! Great work!! Your characters and scenes are very real and your story moves along so well..I am definitely ready to continue reading this book!! Are you going to query agents or self-publish.??.what ever you choose,I say keep going and get this published..BRAVO!!

    Kathy

    • Thanks Kathy. I appreciate that very much. I’m still finishing up the story, so I haven’t started looking for an agent yet, but that is the plan. When the book is done, I’ll begin that part of the process, and I’m sure I’ll update things on the blog. Take care!

  6. Yes, we played ‘Zozo! I would love to hear more of your story, when the characters go back to New Mexico!

  7. I like the characters and the way it is progressing. I am only on page 25, end of chapter three but I had to reread part of it and wanted to comment. On page 6, 2nd/3rd paragraph where Miranda notices, this is her POV but the story until then is done from Max’s POV. In Chapter 3 where we change from Max’s point of view to Jake’s, it just came out of the blue, it was off putting and like I said I had to go back and reread.
I really like the story and can’t wait to read more.

    • Thanks for the feedback, Lori. I will correct the POV with Miranda, and take a look at my transition in POV from Max to Jake. I appreciate you pointing that out!
